Audran to the masses

Picked up a copy of George Alec Effinger's When Gravity Fails recently, and I'm already hooked. It's a gritty, hardboiled, cyberpunk fiction published in 1987, centered around the character of Marîd Audran; a detective that's been hired to look for a two-hundred-year-old "godfather's son. What I like about it so far is that the technologies could easily be something from current times. Implants, handheld phones, etc. I'm only 30 pages in, and already the topics range from transhumanism to gender identity. It's also a unique story to me because it takes place in some futuristic middle eastern country, which is an interesting choice compared to some of the other typical locations like LA, NY, or even Tokyo. There's a few books in this series, so I can't wait to dig into more of it.
